22-May-2024 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM - WEBINAR: From Agouti Rats to Zebrafish - Pain Recognition and Analgesic Techniques for Laboratory Animals
May 22, 2024 | 1:00PM – 2:00 PM EDT / 10:00AM - 11:00AM PST

From Agouti Rats to Zebrafish - Pain Recognition and Analgesic Techniques for Laboratory Animals

Webinar Description
Timely, accurate diagnosis and treatment of laboratory animal pain is remarkably important in the research setting as the predominant goal is to improve animal welfare and well-being; however, effects of the analgesic techniques and any unaddressed pain on study outcomes must also be considered. This discussion emphasizes the newest, yet most practical analgesic methods in laboratory animal species including novel and validated pain scoring systems, advances in clinical analgesic techniques, and the most useful analgesic agents and procedures to produce multimodal analgesia. Case studies will be presented. Information gained will be valuable for all veterinary personnel caring for laboratory animal species. Participants should obtain a deeper understanding of how to properly recognize and treat acute and chronic pain states in various laboratory animals using the most up-to-date clinically available analgesic techniques.

  1. The webinar will be recorded and available on the CALAS website to all registrants following the session.
  2. Registrants will be eligible to receive a vendor-supported gift card, drawn for at the end of the session.
  3. If you would like to attend but at this time, it is cost-prohibitive, please email the webinar chair (Charly McKenna, mckennch@uoguelph.ca) as exceptions may be provided.

Presenter: Rebecca A. Johnson, DVM, PhD, DACVAA
Clinical Professor, Veterinary Anesthesia and Pain Management & Research Animal Anesthesiologist
    University of Wisconsin-Madison

    Dr. Rebecca Johnson
Dr. Johnson obtained her DVM from the Ohio State University in 1993. She completed a residency and MS degree at the University of Wisconsin, became board-certified in Veterinary Anesthesiology and Pain Management in 1997, and completed a PhD in Respiratory Neurophysiology in 2002.

She currently is a Clinical Professor of Anesthesia and Pain Management and the Research Anesthesiologist at the University of Wisconsin. Her interests include investigating novel anesthetic and analgesic techniques for multiple laboratory animal species.
