Morning Workshops:

100 - Multi-Modality Animal Imaging in Research
Timing: TBD
$125

Welcome to CALAS’ Small Animal Imaging Workshop.  Please join the staff of the STTARR Innovation Centre to learn about the various preclinical imaging modalities and their advantages and disadvantages.  Case studies will be presented on Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance, Radionuclide Imaging, Ultrasound, and Optical Imaging.  Attendees will also have the opportunity for hands-on work at some imaging systems.  Experience is not a requirement..

101 - Mouse Pathology
Timing: TBD
$125

This workshop is hosted by the Pathology Core at the Centre for Phenogenomics.  This is a chance to gain more knowledge on mouse phenotyping and discovery necropsies to complement research studies and moreover, to foster a collaborative and educational environment.  The first half of the workshop will cover mouse anatomy, histology, tissue stains and the ideal necropsy, while highlighting points of interests that often arise with users when they submit their samples for phenotyping.  The second half of the workshop provides a tour of the TCP Pathology Core lab, as well as a mouse necropsy demonstration.

102 - Husbandry, Handling, Restraint and Injection of Rodents
Timing: TBD
$150

This session will introduce participants to basic husbandry and observation of mice and rats, gentle handling and restraint, and injection techniques (SQ, IP, IV). It is recommended for participants who would like practice for their CALAS/ACSAL Certification exams, those who are new to the field, or those who are refining their technique.

103 - Swine Intubation and Ventilation
9:00AM - 11:00AM
$175

Swine intubation and appropriate ventilation can be a challenging task.  It requires a fair degree of skill and experience.  In this workshop, participants will learn how to choose proper endotracheal tube sizes and how to intubate swine in two different positions.  Participants will also gain knowledge about the most common mistakes during intubation and how to avoid them. Demonstrations of swine ventilation, with the goal of keeping end tidal CO2 with in normal range will be provided.  The advantages and disadvantages of volume ventilation and pressure ventilation will be discussed as well.

Afternoon Workshops:

201 - Anesthesia and Blood Collection Techniques in Mice
Timing: TBD
$150

Participants will observe a demonstration and practice a variety of common laboratory animal techniques including inhalation anesthesia, monitoring, and blood sampling (saphenous & tail vein, cardiac puncture), with mice. This workshop is highly recommended for technicians who are proficient in the handling of mice and are seeking expansion of their technical knowledge.

202 - Rat Cannulation
Timing: TBD
$250

This workshop will cover the technique of cannulating the carotid artery and jugular vein in rats.  The participants will observe and then practice the surgical techniques. Basic surgical skills are a pre-requisite for this workshop.
