Status: Temporary Full-time (one year Maternity Leave with option to renew for a 2nd year)

University Health Network’s Animal Resource Centre is based at six sites in the City of Toronto. Currently, investigators use all common species of laboratory animals, including a large population of transgenic and knockout mice.

As noted in the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Medicine ‘Standards of Veterinary Care’, include providing clinical, diagnostic, and veterinary care to a wide range of species; oversight of the husbandry, preventative medicine and health surveillance programs; update site/study-specific standard operating procedures; provide expertise, clinical assistance, and research advice and support in the development and usage of appropriate animal models; assisting in pre-, intra-, and post-operative surgical procedures; and ensuring appropriate compliance with required regulatory bodies.

Additionally, the Clinical Veterinarian will assist in training of researchers, research and facility staff in techniques or procedures performed as part of approved protocols; supporting the Animal Care Committees with veterinary review of submitted protocols; attending Institutional Animal Care Committee meetings; overseeing regulatory compliance within the facilities, and assisting the Director with other functions of the facilities.

The position requires an ongoing interface with Principle Investigators and their laboratory staff. The applicant must be familiar with the Animals for Research Act as well as the Guidelines and Policies of the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC). This position requires that the veterinarian be on a rotating on-call schedule.

Qualifications:
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) required
• Licensed to practice in Ontario and registered with the College of Veterinarians of Ontario required
• A minimum of two years as a clinical laboratory animal veterinarian required
• Experience with small and large animal research models required
• Registration with Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Medicine and American Association of Laboratory Animal Science required
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Service oriented approach
• Must be familiar with the Animals for Research Act as well as the Guidelines and Policies of the Canadian Council on Animal Care
