Casual Animal Attendant

SUMMARY

Carleton University has a current opening for a casual animal attendant. Candidate must have the ability to work (2-4 hours) 1-2 weekends a month. The ideal candidate could also be available over holidays and occasionally Mon-Fri 8-4pm as needed to replace full time staff on vacation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Independently perform daily animal checks and husbandry for mice and rats within a BSC or CS5.
  • Document clinical cases and competently administer oral, topical and injectable treatments as directed by the veterinarian or supervisor
  • Wean pups and set up breeding pair under supervision and following Carleton Universities Standard Operating Procedures
  • Able to lift and move large feed and bedding bags on a daily basis
  • Preparing cage and bottle supplies for daily husbandry
  • Assist with sentinel sampling
  • Disinfect holding rooms and surgical suites
  • Monitor rodents post-operatively and assist with post-op care
  • Comfortable with euthanasia techniques and tissue collection
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills and work effectively as a team member.
  • Working with large equipment such as a cage washer
  • Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technology Diploma
  • Experience: Minimum of one year experience in a rodent husbandry
  • Certification/Licensure: RLAT/ARLAT or equivalent

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to consistently stand and sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift and move at least 50 pounds.
  • No known allergies to Rats or Mice.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position may require duties on rotating weekends (usually one a month) and/or holidays.
